Local History of Lorne, Victoria

Lorne is a coastal town located on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. The area has a fascinating history that spans thousands of years, from the traditional owners of the land, the Gadubanud people, to the European settlers and tourists who have visited the town over the years.

The Gadubanud People

The Gadubanud people lived in the area known as Lorne for thousands of years, long before European colonisation of Australia. They were a small group of Indigenous Australians who had a rich culture, language, and traditions. They lived off the land and the sea, and had a deep understanding of the environment and the animals that lived in it. There are still descendants of the Gadubanud people who live in the area today.

European Settlement

The first European to visit the Lorne area was a British explorer named Thomas Mitchell in 1836. However, it wasn't until the 1850s that permanent European settlement began in the area. The town of Lorne was established in 1869 when a timber mill was built in the area. The mill provided employment for the locals and helped to develop the town.

In the late 1800s, Lorne became a popular holiday destination for wealthy Victorians. They would escape the heat of the city in the summer months and travel down to the coast to enjoy the fresh sea air and beautiful scenery. Many grand holiday homes were built in Lorne during this time, which can still be seen today.

Development of Lorne

Throughout the 1900s, Lorne continued to develop as a tourist destination. The town was connected to the rest of Victoria by road and rail, which made it easier for tourists to visit. The local council built a beachside caravan park, and many new attractions and facilities were added to the town.

Lorne also became a popular spot for artists and writers. The natural beauty of the area inspired many famous works, including Arthur Streeton's painting 'Ocean Blue, Lorne.'
