Distinguished and Famous people from Lorne

🏄 Gail Couper

Gail Couper moved with her family to Lorne in 1959 and began surfing two years later. She became a finalist at the first official world surfing championship in 1964 and built an extraordinary competitive record, including ten Bells Beach victories and five Australian titles. Surfing was a family enterprise: her parents helped administer contests and transport young surfers in search of waves. Her reputation was quieter than her results deserved, but her place in the sport is recorded by the Australian National Surfing Museum. Lorne’s association is through adolescence, family and the beginnings of a long competitive career.

🌊 Wayne Lynch

Wayne Lynch grew up in Lorne and began competing as a child, winning six successive Victorian junior titles and four Australian junior titles between 1967 and 1970. Films including Evolution and Sea of Joy helped bring his surfing to a wider audience. His later influence also came through board shaping and an approach to wave riding valued for its freedom and expression, not simply contest results. The local connection is childhood and early surfing, within the same coastal community that helped nurture Gail Couper. Their overlapping stories make Lorne’s contribution to Australian surfing more than a list of separate champions.
